14. Are you inspected and licensed to sell rabbit meat, poultry, and eggs?
Yes, we are certified by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) to legally process and sell our farm products. We hold the following exemptions and certifications:
Rabbit Exemption: This allows us to process up to 20,000 rabbits annually on-site without continuous inspection. Our rabbit meat can be sold directly to consumers, farmers markets, restaurants, grocery stores, and wholesalers within West Virginia. We follow all WVDA regulations to ensure quality and safety.
Poultry Exemption: Under applicable federal and state guidelines, we are permitted to process a limited number of poultry each year without continuous inspection, as long as we meet strict sanitary and operational standards. This enables us to provide fresh, locally processed poultry while maintaining compliance.
Egg Distributor Certificate of Authorization (Small Producer): This certification allows us to sell up to 150 dozen eggs weekly without additional permit or inspection fees. We register with the WVDA each year to maintain compliance and ensure our eggs meet state quality standards.
These certifications reflect our commitment to providing high-quality, locally produced rabbit meat, poultry, and eggs to our community. We strictly follow all applicable state and federal guidelines to ensure the safety and excellence of our products.
15. Do you sell live rabbits or any live animals?
No, we don’t sell live rabbits or any live animals. This is an intentional part of how we operate at Carlton Hill Farm.
Every animal here has a purpose—whether they’re part of our carefully managed breeding program, laying eggs, or being raised specifically for meat to feed our family and the local community. Because we farm on a small scale, we plan each breeding cycle with intention to avoid producing more animals than we can responsibly and humanely care for. That level of planning helps us stay efficient, uphold high standards of animal welfare, and make the most of our limited space.
While we don’t sell live animals, we’re always happy to support others who are interested in raising their own. If you have questions or are looking for advice, feel free to reach out. We’re glad to help however we can.
